Chapter 16 ~Wolfgang~

After Ceres fell asleep, I decided to assess the damage to the house. Most of it was structural. Eighteen windows needed replacing. There was some cosmetic damage caused by the fires. Some of the décor in the house was completely trashed.

The worst of the damage was the two women who had died in the attack.

Brenda came in with her three strongest followers. Together, the four of them infiltrated the house. They killed two before going upstairs.

Mira was missing, but at least she was alive.

The first of the dead was Denise, a pregnant woman who had tried to stop the Witches from going upstairs. She fired a round into a Witch, who turned the bullet back at her. It pierced her heart and, being pregnant, she died in an instant.

The second woman was another familiar face, but she wasn't one of our wolves. She hailed from the Moab pack. She was Riley's ex and the mother of his son. They had one of those epic breakups that almost caused World War III. I couldn't imagine why she would come here. She had their son back home and hated Riley enough that she made it clear they could not be in the same room ever again.

I looked up to see my cousin approaching. We had the bodies in the den, to keep them away from people who shouldn't see them. He had the door open and was coming in, so I rushed over to him to keep him from seeing her.

His eyes were already locked on her body. "Who is that?" he demanded. I heard the recognition in his voice and knew that he didn't want to believe his senses.

"You don't want to see," I said.

His eyes bled from blue to amber as he looked at me. "Who the fuck is that?" he asked again.

I couldn't hide it from him and we both knew it. "It's Angela," I whispered.

He pushed me aside before I could stop him. I stumbled as he rushed to her body. I saw him kneel beside her and pick up her limp hand. It surprised me to see him so broken up over her death, but I supposed I would have felt the same in his place. They may have hated each other, but they shared something that connected them forever.

"I'll kill them for you," he whispered to her.

"Fuck me…"

I looked back at the door and saw Rodney staring at his brother. I saw the sadness in his eyes. "What's going to happen to him?" I asked.

"He's coming here," Riley said. There was no disputing it. Now that Angela was gone, he had the right to claim their son. He always had that right but respected that Angela was capable of raising him when he himself was not, so he had let her. They had broken up before she knew she was pregnant. Riley wasn't ready to be a parent when Caleb was born, so he paid child support instead. He and Caleb spoke frequently, so he wasn't a complete dead-beat dad.
